Skylight Installation

Category: Restore & Repair

As I said yesterday, here are photos of the two new skylights Jay installed in our master bedroom. Jay, our neighbor, worked evenings during the week and finished up this morning (which explains the varied lighting in the photos we took).

Jay's a former carpenter, so we were thrilled to get his help....

Here are photos of both skylights installed, both from inside and from the roof outside.

We didn't document the installation in great detail, but there are plenty of good tutorials on the web. Here are a few:
- Lowe's step-by-step instructions
- Do it Yourself.com's overview
- Homestore.com (with airplane emergency card-style drawings! )
- Bob Villa (features video, although this is a sun tunnel installation)

Thankyou Aaron for your advice about the SPR and chemical paint removers! You told me exactly what someone else told me...that you will end up using both before it is all over. I just wanted to hear it from another EXPERIENCED RENOVATOR before shelling out that much money. Most of our woodwork is un-painted...but it all needs to be redone...and there is old varnish to deal with also. We worked all day today at the house and accomplished ALOT! We are in the tearing out mode right now...getting rid of all dropped ceilings, uncovering the original back porch and undoing bad remodeling fiasscos from the 1960's. I am dirty and have plaster in my hair. I think I'll shower now... Oh, tell Jeannie we found nut shells in one of the walls today. Lots of them! We must have had a squirrel in the attic at on time. Thanks again for the advice. I will probably bug you for more again soon! Cheryll

P.S The sky lights are really neat and your bathroom looks FABULOUS! I LOVE YOUR TILE CHOICES! I am beginning to itch. Gotta get in the shower! Thanks again! Cheryll

Hey guys, that's really cool!
Have to ask this since we have a dormer similar to yours- what size is the dormer area and what size skylights did you get? Are you going to drywall over the wood in the skylight bay or just paint the wood? We had that dilemma in out last house. The builder put up greenboard. Did you test them with your bucket of water???

Carol

Carol,

The model and size of the skylight we choose is detailed here.

Regarding the interior finish, Jay pointed out during the installation that the nice thing about Velux is they have a channel that the drywall slips right in to. We'll then stain the wood interior. I'll be sure to post some of those pictures when we get to that stage.

As for leaks, we didn't test them with a bucket of water because we didn't have to--it rained the first night after they were in! Sure enough, no leaks!
