In the middle of doing laundry last night, our 1993 Kenmore Heavy Duty dryer turned on me...it actually growled and opened its maw and spit out the words...
NO. MORE. TOWELS!
It then promptly shut down the spinning of its drum, its blower making a low humming noise.
Aaron was gone on business. And I had an armful of wet towels. Which were promptly dispatched all over the house.
This was extremely sad. And drippy. It represented something larger to me...something sinister and darker than just a clump of wet towels.
The appliances in our house have been total divas (to quote Nathan) and I was all, "Ah! Poor Mr. Stove/Fridge/Dryer...there, there. It will be okay."
NOT ANY MORE! Now I feel all ninja and determined and ready to kick some major appliance butt!
I'm going to try to FIX IT MYSELF. Yes, me. All by myself. (knees knocking) With the help of some tools and my trusty internet connection. When I have been successful...and I WILL DEFEAT the dryer...I will post it in the Do It Yourself section. That includes any major mistakes that I make.
For now, I need to wait for $40 in parts from my initial diagnosis.
And pray for the forgiveness of my parents-in-law as I drag our dirty laundry through the alley...to their house.
(In my best movie preview voice...but with a slightly adjusted script...)
She's BACK with a wrench.
And a vengeance.
Move over, Mr. Maytag Repairman.
This little lady isn't going to take it.
From these old appliances.
Anymore.

Glowering at it hasn't worked? Sometimes you can just intimidate appliances into compliance.
Go forth and kick appliance butt.
Your rightiousness is mighty, as I'm sure your toolbox is as well. Maytag, Whirlpool and Amana will shudder at the fearful sound of your approach. Kenmore shall fall and be humbled.
Hail to thee!

Sometimes it may just be the belt on the drum is slipping, with the dryer empty, depress the little switch (keeping the door open)which the door presses and then start the cycle if it's making a humming noise reach in (while still depressing the door switch) and manually spin the drum. If the drum spins all you have is a problem with the belt.

Jocko! Had did you know that? Have you been in my basement?
I actually did spin the drum. And noticed that I still had heat and motor did hum, but no spinning. So I plugged that into the internet and was able to pull up a diagram of the insides of the dryer and diagnose the probability of a broken belt.
I opened the dryer (which I'll post about) and yes...there was the broken belt.
The parts should be here next week.

Repairclinic.com rules for this sort of thing. They were a big help when I was trying to fix my dryer (it turned out to be an intermittent short in the ground).

I've had the same problem with my old dryer, usually it happens when its loaded with heavy items (like towels)and it's real cold in the basement, I guess it's cause the belt or drum are affected by the temp change.
But usually after I get the drum spinning by hand, I can load it and start it normally.

JM,
Take heart. I fixed our dryer (which never was a diva as far as I can tell), then fixed my parent's dryer too (not named toto). Actually it shamed me when our dryer first crapped out and I called the repair guy. He came out, undid two screws, took out and replaced a two bit part and charged me 72 bucks. After that, I too, decided to stand up to dryers. Nice anthropomorphic towels, by the way...
