Mom was Here

Category: Daily Diary

I went to grab a towel from the linen closet and....whoa! What's this?

An organizational tornado has struck!!! All of my linens, towls, tablecloths, etc. are neatly organized and folded and sorted...

...and LABELED BY SIZE!

Obviously, my mom has been here :) I love it that she still does this. Actually, if my mom could just refold all my life's problems and then label them by size (so they are easy to prioritize) and put them "away" for me, I'd be one REALLY happy kid. But, you know moms. Making you do it yourself for the "experience" of it...so you can "grow" from it.

Well, I'll still take the folded sheets a la Martha Stewart. Thanks Mom.

p.s. You can see the "before" photos here...often, it was even worse.

Wow, is she a Virgo? Organization like that deserves some celebration! Yahtzee, anyone? :) (Yes, I enlarged the picture.)
Hooray for moms. I really miss mine.

Holey money Kristen!!! YES! She is a Virgo. HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT!?!

Ahh, I guess it takes one to know one. I could spot that trait anywhere. Virgo is ruled by organization and order. The other day, I was at my doctor's and her office was in disarray, with boxes of samples from drug reps all over her desk. There's a lot of extra packaging involved, and she was taking out the one or two pills in blister packs inside each box and storing them by type in larger boxes. She said her first appointment of the day had cancelled, and off she went about organizing the drug closet. "I love projects like this. I'm a Virgo," she confessed. "I was just going to ask!" I replied. We had a good laugh over that one. Sorry if I freaked you out! Like all good Virgos, I love order, but unfortunately I'm still prone to clutter. How nice of your mom to organize your linen closet. Labled and everything. Very impressive. And totally Virgo. :)

Thanks a lot, mom. But I prefer the before method. Than I don't have to mess it up as it already is messed. POPS"30"

Labels, huh? That's pretty impressive.

Here's our "organization" method:
*Leave everything in the dryer until the next load needs to be dried
*Pile dry load on top of dryer
*Leave second load in dryer until you need to dry another load
*Move second load to bed
*Fold and put away the towels, socks and underwear
*Pile the rest on top of last week's clean clothes in the hamper
*Repeat

We wear wrinkled clothes a lot.

I'm a Cancer ... does that mean I wallow in chaos?

Well, my dad's a Cancer and he certainly wallows in organizational chaos. But Cancers are known as creative, loving, protective and intuitive. If you believe astrology, of course. I'd say my dad is all those things, and more! Not bad traits, after all.

Kristin 2's methodology sounds vaguely familiar to me....hmmmm.... I'm an Aries who likes control over my environment. But my idea of neatness is "away". Even if it is stuffed in a drawer, it is "away."

Though lately I am an Aries who has been defeated by chaos. I feel more like a sheep. Baaaa.

Neat, orderly piles: When the dirty pile gets bigger than the clean pile, it's laundry time - very efficient.

Left to my own devices, I have everything in a jumble. I know where every goes, but there isn’t any rhyme or reason to it. The sander goes in the drawer with the tuning fork and the binoculars because there was room in the drawer when the sander needed a new home. Thirty years or more in one abode, would probably lead me inextricably to a house in the same condition as the one Jeanne and Aaron took over. Thankfully throughout our married life, my wife has slowly encroached on my areas of chaos and disorder. I will open a closet or drawer, expecting to dig for the sharpening stone that is under seven CDs and a book of postcards and find everything ordered, sorted and labeled. She really loves those plastic cabinets with all the little drawers. I don’t really understand how she conceives of the order any more than I understand trigonometry – it just happens. As our life together continues, her powers of organization get stronger as my areas of chaos recede. At the top of her game, she will probably be like Jeanne’s mom, visiting our son and sorting his linens.

SD

I've never really thought much about astrology, but "creative, loving, protective and intuitive" actually sounds a lot like me.

SD, I know what you mean about knowing where everything goes, even if the location makes no sense! My hubby is trying to turn me into a neat freak, but it isn't working so far.

I read an article that said right-brained people prefer things to be "organized" horizontally ... everything spread out where they can see it, and left-brained people prefer things to be stored more vertically ... everything put up and away.

So that's another theory. Right-brained here ... my desk at work is covered from one end to the other, but I know where everything is!
