Renaissance Man = Gramp K

Category: Mailbag

Fixing a washing machine? Eh. I'm a newbie.

Gramp K (our grandpa) MAKES HIS OWN SAILS! (Among other things.) So, the guy can fix appliances, do carpentry AND SEW! He also designed a globe! (A very cool vintage globe.)

This boat is using sails he made. Obviously, this picture was taken during this past summer...not within the last week. Aaron and his dad are at the helm. Aaron's dad is responsible for the nice new paint job, and (although you can't see it), Aaron and his dad stripped and restained the teak inside the boat. The Mistral has been in the family since the late 60's.

Gramp K can also COOK! As is demonstrated by his yearly tithe of yummy hardtack to our household and his gift of homemade CARAMEL.

Yes, there is homemade caramel in this can. No, the can is not open. No, the contents did not start out as caramel.

If you figure out how he did it, PLEASE PLEASE do not try this at home. HouseInProgress cannot be held responsible for damaged fingers, toes, walls or ceilings. This recipe is best left to skilled Renaissance Men like Gramp K.

This combination of power tools, sewing AND cooking makes him officially more dangerous than I. In a good way. I strive for that combination of skills. As I said, I have to work on the cooking and the sewing.

Wooden house. Wooden boat. This is a family which enjoys taking care of finely crafted things.

(Gotcha Keith! :)

Did he do the old boil-the-can-of-sweetened-condensed-milk trick?

Around here, ladies make caramel pie that way. I've heard stories of burst cans, though.

I have to plead the Fifth! :) But, the Surgeon General says that burst cans are a definite risk of playing with condensed milk and a stove.

HELLO.
about 3 years ago my ma was laid-off and had little money for christmas. with all of her free time though she set out to see all of my relitives to gain family recipies. she then compiled them into a homeade cookbook with all of the recipies for all the food that I like.
The book in back of the index has contact info for the entire family(updated anually), family gathering songs, meal time prayers, and a calander of family events w/o days; birthday etc.
it took her several months due to lack of computer skills.
I cook often now cause i have the manual. i decided that bookstore cookbooks werent it cause it didnt end up how ma used to make it.
regular cookbooks are for people with too much free time. everything is from scratch. over half of the recipies i use "cheat".
perhaps if you got some of your familys recipies you could cook because itll come back what you saw going on in the kitchen when you were a kid.
try to find the recipie to goulache in martha stewarts or betty crocker cook book.
but be warned ea. recipie will require alot of time since a visit is reqired for most. after getting about 4 recipies she had a "bring your recipie party" wich took less time.

Isn't this the method for Dulce de Leche in Mexico?

What gorgeous boat (and a great picture)!

I think of my dad as a Renaissance man, too. He can fix or build just about anything, but he's so helpful around the house (besides hanging the laundry on the line as I mentioned in your last entry). He is a great baker who taught me how to can and to make jelly, and he did much of the sewing in the house. When he was in the Air Force in Vietnam, he made extra money doing uniform alterations for his buddies. He said there were sewing machines available to all at each base, but few men knew how to use them. He would charge a few dollars less than whatever the local tailor on/near the base was charging and everyone made out; the boys had a few extra bucks for beer and my dad made some extra dough to send home to Mom.

Your Gramp K sounds like a great guy!

I have a request here for Gramp K's recipes for:

a) homemade rootbeer
b) his mother's chocolate sour cream sauce
c) currant jam

mmmmmmmmmmmmm. good.
