Trying to Stay Focused...

Category: Daily Diary

OK, Jeannie's really tired so I'm on deck for today's entry. Trouble is, as much as I try to focus on home improvement stuff like this...

...my mind keeps wandering to cool toys like this...

...Apple's new Mac Mini. I'm such a sucker for good design. Maybe I'm distracted because a clean and simple gadget is in such stark contrast to our messy, dusty bungalow? Or maybe it's because someone's apparently giving Mac Minis away for free.

The truth is that I'm a geek at heart--which would explain the giant home networking project in the basement, I guess.

At times like these I just need to come to terms with the fact that, for the forseeable future, I need to lay off of the high tech toys and enjoy the fact that I still get to play with stuff like this...

Now if you don't mind I need to wander downstairs and work on crimping some Cat5 jacks. ;-)

I also have an old house, mine was built in 1912, and have been debating the merits of updating the wiring. Many rooms have had new electrical wiring put in, but a few have not. We have coax running to one bedroom and the living room, and we have phone jacks EVERYWHERE (I would like to meet the people that felt they needed three phone jacks in the dining room but NOT an electrical outlet).

Anyways... I debated running cat5 to a few rooms, but then I decided to try a wireless G router (802.11g). I think I paid $36 for the router and my laptop already had wireless built in (cards are $30-80). It works wonderfully in any room of the house, and is much cheaper than running cat5, and I even have the freedom to take my work outside to a porch or deck.

I love reading your site. It's amazing that you guys are able to do all this work and still keep your sense of humor, and then have energy to share it with everyone else!

Hi Aaron,
My husband is cracking up behind me listening as I read your post aloud. You two must be cut from the same cloth. =)

I think it's comforting for him to know he's not alone in his pursuit of techie gadgets and a fully wired home, when boring things like insulation and sheetrock are probably a little more necessary at the moment.

Just a little.

As always, thanks for sharing...

I gotta say I rue the day when I signed up for one of those offers in order to get a free $50 Chilis gift card. I'm still waiting for the card, but in the meantime, I've added easily 200 spam emails to my inbox. Just want to mention that. Caveat Freebie-tor.
