Valentine's Day + Aaron's Birthday = Whoo hoo! Celebration! Busy-ness
So....surprise Valentine's dinner on the still to be finished second floor...
But! Before dinner, "mysterious friend Lisa" (aka CakeFace) came over to help me construct THE CAKE for today's birthday. Because it is a two-day cake. And since my kitchen is a disaster, my lovely in-law's lent me theirs....
We used all the tools that modern bakers need!
Like mixing bowls for the chocolate sauce!
And PDA's (to store recipes)!
Then Lisa had me cut the yellow cake into bricks...and using the chocolate sauce for mortar...we made an upside-down igloo!
Then we refrigerated it, and I had to sneak out and ice it today, and then...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AARON!!!
p.s. AND THANK YOU LISA!!!! MWAH!

Yum. But how exactly does one serve upside-down igloo cake? Is there some sort of igloo unmolding that goes on?
Happy (belated) b-day, Aaron!

Ohhhhh! Maybe if we all bug her, Lisa will hop on and share the recipe for "The Cake". Because it is, honestly, world famous. Wicked, wicked good (as we would say in NYC).
Oh Lisa.........

I have to argue with the idea that we would say "wicked, wicked good" in NYC. We'd probably be more likely to say "f*ckin fantastic". But our friends from Rhode Island and maybe Massachusetts would definitely say "wicked".

okay, Okay, OKAY. I cave. But really, I think THE cake is just too good NOT to share.
A bit of history: My mom, Elaine, can confirm this, but I do believe she first had THE cake at her wedding shower. And somehow, it has become the EXPECTED cake for all birthdays since. I think several years ago, Mom got a bit tired of making THE cake for us and asked, "Gosh. Don't you want something else?" To which my brother Jeff and I would respond, "NOOOOOO! We want THE cake! Igloo Cake! Igloo Cake! Igloo Cake!!!" Gasp! A birthday without it is just not a proper birthday. It just isn't done.
So, I give to you the recipie:
bake 1 yellow box cake in a 9x13 pan. cool and cut into small cubes (bricks)
sauce:
beat 5 egg whites until fluffy, set aside
melt 1 package of Baker's Germans chocolate (the green box), also set aside
in a separate bowl, cream (this will take a while):
1 stick butter
1 cup confectioner's sugar
beat in:
3 egg yolks (yolks only!)
melted chocolate
THEN, carefully fold in the egg whites.
Assemble THE cake:
line a large mixing bowl with plastic wrap.
start with a layer of cake cubes on the bottom
throw in a healthy layer of sauce
layer of cake cubes
more sauce
end with cake.
cover the top with plastic wrap
refrigerate overnight.
to frost:
turn cake out onto plate
whip 1 pint heavy whipping cream until stiff
(add in some confectioner's sugar to taste toward end)
frost the cake, and VOILA! you have THE cake: Igloo Cake.
Is GREAT with a big glass of milk.
This does have raw eggs in it, but nobody in our family has died after more than 40 years of THE cake.
May your birthdays always be properly done.
Lisa, AKA CakeFace

Yup! Forty four years to be exact. Sure hope Aaron enjoyed a wonderful birthday and that THE CAKE made it extra special. I believe eating this special dessert over the years is resonsible for Lisa's wonderful, kind and happy disposition. Glad we could share lit with you.

ooohhh!!! Lisa AND Lisa's MOM!! w00t! Happy day!
(Tony, really? Rats! I messed up! My cousin and I grew up saying things were "wicked" or "wick" (short for wicked...as in "That's wick!") in NYC...but that was the early 80's. Or it could have been an NY Irish thing. Or maybe we were geographically misplaced. Now I say "Geez Louise" a lot and I have no idea where THAT came from. Proposed new research study: Geographical Origins of Everyday Exclamations :)

Well, this is all way more attention than I'm usually comfortable with on my birthday...that said, I'm definitely lucky to have both a wife who is so thoughtful (and able to surprise me) as well as a good friend who knows how to make THE cake.
OK, enough attention to my birthday--let's talk about the house again like normal! ;-)

Hey, Tony! I was going to lay claim to "wicked" on behalf of Rhode Island and part of Massachusetts (the eastern half, in my experience). I never heard "wicked" as an adjective until I moved to Rhody from Connecticut for college. Now I [gulp] unfortunately hear myself saying it a lot. But not with the accent. I don't really have the accent ... yet.
And J, my friend just moved to NYC, so I know at least one person there is calling stuff "wicked awesome." :)

Harry Potter's pal, Ron, says "wicked" a whole lot.
