Custom Shower Framing Complete

Category: Restore & Repair

As promised, here is the framing for the shower.

Paul's guys have done a great job, packing alot in a space that will be compact but very efficient...

The medicine cabinet (this one) will be to the left in the first photo. Then there is going to be a second storage space to the right of the sink--just above where that Dewalt case is sitting on the floor.

Here is the bathroom way long ago (August 2003!) when we started out.

The second photo above shows the framing of the shower. The angle of the ceiling made us decide that we'd need a custom shower. The dimensions of the floor pan are above average--36" x 48"--but not overly luxurious. (Our friends Dave and Carol still have our dream shower--4' square!) Regardless, I've stood in the space and it will definitely be large enough for a 6'7" guy.

Our shower's size will be a bit reduced by the "neo-angle" cut out where the door will be. It makes the actual shower space smaller but was unavoidable because of the dimensions of the room--you can see in the second photo at the top that there is a bump out from the opposite wall where the vent stack is enclosed. Without the angle cut the shower wouldn't allow enough room to pass through the center of the room.

So anyway, Paul's guys made so much progress that it's time to insulate the bathroom walls. More on that later.

Looks wonderful! That will be one awesome shower. Especially compared to our shower - 29 inches deep by 36 inches wide. Try shaving your legs in THAT.

Whoooo Hoooo! I'm so excited to see your bathroom coming together. I'm living vicariously through you guys. Two and a half years in the house and our bathroom is still torn apart...sigh! Keep those pictures coming.

Just curious about your plumbing arrangements, does your permit allow you to wet vent the sink into that vent pipe (what looks like a vent stack behind the framing)and is that vent stack up to code (does chicago allow such an angle for such a long run?)?
Plumbing inspector (has to check it before you cover it)will probably catch it before you put up the wall board.

Jeff--Woops, that photo is misleading. That's not the vent stack, it's a PVC conduit for our structured wiring (coaxial and Cat5e). You can see detail on the wiring home run here.

Looks great. I have two custom showers to build and am just itching to get to them. What goes on the walls? Will you be tiling? Nice photos. Thanks.

Jane--We'll be tiling the two back walls and putting a stone curb on the bottom edge. Then remaining sides will be glass set directly in the tile/stone.

I just visited a friend of mine who just finished a custon shower. It's 41" on either side out from the corner with a neo angle plus a triangle shaped bench in the corner. It looks a little tight but there is so much room. There are two shower heads. It's very nice. I don't think anyone uses the corner spaces in showers anyway. I think your 36x48 will be very spacious.

Good Luck

I wasn't sweating the size of the shower until...Aaron stood inside of the showerbase. I realize that I live in a much smaller world than my dear, dear husband does.

I also realized this when--in a fit of overconfidence about my knitting ability--I measured one of his shoulders of one of his sweaters. Almost 30" across. Yikes!

The guy is true to his Viking roots. That's all I can think of.

Hey what happened here? Everything just sort of ends in 2005.
Was looking great! Did you ever finish it?
