The Durock is in the House!

Category: Restore & Repair

Paul's team has made a lot more progress in the master bathroom. The Durock backing for the shower walls and the tile floor are in place. What is Durock? Good question that the folks at US Gypsum answer here.

The next thing up will be the walls. Not just the bathroom--the entire second floor!

You know what that means--things upstairs will no longer look like this:

Hard to believe, really. We've lived for so long with this situation--the photo above is from late June last year--that it's hard to remember that it's ever been different. And to think that I'd hoped we'd be done with the second floor last fall!

So, we're talking to two new contractors--a plasterer (our first choice) and a drywaller (our backup). Our plan (ever since we had to tear out the second floor walls) had been to go with a historically-accurate plaster skim coat over blueboard, but lots of people have told us that price will be an issue. So we're getting bids for drywall as a backup.

More on that to come!

Hi Guys,

looks great! what kind of shower pan construction are you using? I am about to start construction on mine. I was going to use a bonsal pan, but it was too expensive. 729.00 for a 36x42. http://wwww.bonsal.com

Durock,or any other brand of Portland cement based drywall, is a MUST for any area that has direct contact with water. Green board is merely water resistant & can be used for the rest of the bathroom areas. Cement based drywall should also be used for the backsplash at the sink & the steamy stove area...POPS"30"

Matt--Good issue I forgot to mention. The shower floor will actually be done in 1" hex tile just like the rest of the room. The subfloor will be waterproofed with NobleSeal, a crack isolation membrane that we also used for our first floor bathroom.

I also failed to clarify that we'll also use Durock for the enclosed area of the shower ceiling, it just isn't there yet.

When I first read the headline, I thought you were talking about hogs (Duroc). You can take the girl off the farm, but sometimes it creeps back in!
