Bathroom Wainscoat Pt. 1 - Beadboard Prep

Category: Do it Yourself

After deciding to go with high quality panel sheets for the wainscoat in our master bathroom, we picked up the sheets from Lee Lumber.

For starters, J and I spent a few evenings priming everything.

A quick tip if your doing this yourself--be sure to prime both sides and all edges. It keeps moisture from penetrating the wood and causing it to warp or flex. This is especially important in bathrooms and kitchens.

Jeanne had figured out all of the measurements , so we were ready to go with the basic cuts.

(Note from jm: The trick to the measurements was to make the most of fitting the beadboard around the perimeter so...no waste! So, working with 8' x 4' sheets, I had to figure out how they would fit around the perimeter once cut. I drew an outline of the room and played around with the math until I could fit the beadboard around the room with the least amount of cuts. Thank you, high school geometry class!)

Not having our own table saw (yet!) we decided to rent one from the local Home Depot. Here are my dad and I late in the evening getting the most from our rental fee before it's due back...

Up next? Mounting the beadboard and re-installing the original built-in cabinet!

Good tip about priming both sides - I wouldn't have thought of that! Can't wait to see what it looks like when it's up.

Nice work. I've been there before with the all-night rental work. The one time I rented a floor sander I used it until almost 11 at night.

As usual you guys have great advice. We are planning on installing beadboard in our bathroom to hide the horrible plaster patch jobs POs have done in the past. Our only other option would be to rip out all the plaster & drywall. :( Anyway, the tip on priming is brilliant, and one I wouldn't have thought of, at least not until the boards warped and would have needed ripping out an replacing.

I know it's silly- but it made me smile to think of other people pulling those late nights with tool rentals. Tricky all that measuring and I want a band saw too! The good ones aren't cheap though...

Your bathroom will look just beautiful with that new beadboard! Isn't it amazing how little touches like that can add so much character to a room?

Can't wait to see the finished product!

This is unrelated to your post but I thought you'd like to know that the very un-housey Wall Street Journal yesterday in their weekly "Money's Worth/Real Estate" column had your 'hood featured (if I remember correctly). Since its only the paper version and not for free on the web, the upshot you are in an up and coming area!

Quote- "Real-estate experts are always on the lookout for urban neighborhoods with upside potential. Here are 3 properties in locations that have begun gentrifying." So picture of a house, 2 story, ugly oval glass door with metal (!) awning, 385,000: "Albany Park, Chicago. 2800 square feet with 3 BR/3.5 bath. A multicultural enclave on Chicago's north side. Prices haven't yet taken off even though its sandwiched by more fashionable neighborhoods Lincoln Square and Old Irving. The house is a half-block from the commuter line, a 20-minute ride from downtown. Fenced front and back yards, plus a vault (?) in the master bedroom." (what KIND of vault???). The others they had listed were Southie in Boston and Hayes Valley, SF so you are in good company.

PS: hubby says you can cut beaded ply panels pretty well by clamping a 2X4 guide onto them and using a circular saw.

You're making me want to put up some beadboard somewhere ... anywhere! :)
