I trooped downstairs this afternoon to snap this photo of Aaron working on a few pieces of trim that he needs for the second floor...
...and four houses down the alley, his dad was working away in the backyard on the family sailboat, "refreshing the varnish" on the woodwork.
This woodworking thing seems to be in their DNA as Grandpa Keith also has a history of working with wood!
Soon they will both be far enough along on their respective projects so they can take a break a do a little bit of this...
One of the grandest things about summer in Chicago, really.

Yep...my husband and his father don't seem to have a lot in common on the surface (one's an astronomy professor; the other is a retired Harrier pilot and Marine Corps officer), they live hundreds of miles apart, and they don't talk a lot, but they both have this irrepressible urge to build things. His father builds furniture and boats, and he spends hours out in the garage building telescopes. Somewhere around here I probably have identical pictures of them in their workshops...they're even starting to look alike.

Oh wow. That's our final project...the sailboat. First the house then the sailboat to get away from the house. Oh yes and sailing lessons would probably be a good idea too.
Great picture with the boat in front of the city skyline. Georgous!

Great name for the boat. But,if I recall correctly, the mistral is a cold northeast wind & is term used in France. Not to good to be on Lake Michigan if the mistral is blowing. Not for this landlubber anyway....POPS -30-

To POPS: What a surprise that you knew what a 'mistral' is. You are the first to identify the term since I bot and mamed it in 1968!!! I've read that the 'mistral winds' are so reliable in the spring along Italy's east coast that a large sailing regatta is regularly scheduled there - it comes out of the Italian Alps- and mostly large yachts. Mark's Mistral, for those who may like to know, is a Pearson 'Ensign' a 22 1/2' daysailer with full keel. When I had it on L.Michigan in the '70's, we also trolled for salmon, and kept a log, which shows that during l5 years of fishing -no electronics- we caught over 700 Coho and King salmon and a few steelhead. Fed a lot of families. Want a great recipe? Let me know.
