Mind the gap(s)!!!
We had a few outstanding repairs needed for the wood floors on the second floor. One LARGE gap in the closet...
...and a few smaller gaps where things were moved around.
If you will recall, our pal Paul gave us some lovely old reclaimed wood from his old house. It was just a "smidge" (my highly technical term) wider than the boards in our house. This didn't show on the small repairs (this is before everything is sanded down to one color...)
But it was possible that it would be noticeable on our larger repair. We are going to install cabinet/closets over that repair, so having it look perfect wasn't that much of a concern. A clever solution was proposed that would outline the future cabinets and allow us to use the reclaimed wood...
Visually, this draws attention away from the slight discrepancies in the board width...and we think it will look smashing when the cabinets are installed!
By the way...those yucky stairs? Well, you win some, you lose some. The treads aren't red oak as we had hoped (to match the rest of the floors). They are Southern yellow pine.
So we are discussing options for staining/varnishing them as they won't stain as evenly as the red oak. However! They have a nice grain so far and sanding them is a BIG improvement over the dreaded blue paint! And the red oak is sanding down beautifully on the first pass...
My toes can't wait!!!

Must be a regional thing - we also discovered our stair treads to upstairs were Pine, while the rest of the floors are oak, with maple in the kitchen. The floor guy was very excited about the pine because he said it was high quality old heart pine. We used no stain and varnished them clear - it's a nice look.

They're going to look awesome - and the non-blue stairs are a big improvement already!

We found oak shorts downstairs and wider pine boards upstairs. I think oak down and pine up must be pretty common.

Are you sanding the floors yourself? Kudos on the creative solution to patching. In the picture of the hallway it looks like the shoe molding is still there, will you be able to get a clean edge without removing it?
Getting the floors done is one of the most impactful parts of restoration/renovation. It's a sign of being on the home stretch!
