Eclectic Weekend

Category: Daily Diary

Finishing any large project always involves finishing a hodge-podge of random, tiny tasks. Since there's no connection between those tasks, each one takes a ton of time.

Finishing an entire floor extends that process tenfold, I think.

First, Saturday...after driving all over Chicago yesterday ("My kingdom for a 4-1/4" baseboard!") we finally did get some work done. With my dad's help we got almost all the electrical work finished off--wall sockets aren in and most of the light switches are installed and operating. We also got three coats of paint on the base trim that will be going in to the master closet. I'd wanted to get it installed yesterday, too, but my driving adventures ate away too much of the day.

Sunday...after a great brunch with my parents (thanks, Mom!) we hiked out to Ikea. Our bounty? The Pax wardrobe system that we'd been eyeing for a while. This was another day we were happy to have the Subaru...

The great thing is that we picked up two bonus items that caught our eye, too: a Poang chair (if you haven't sat in one before, they're way comfortable) and a wall sconce design that surprised us, too.

Both are obviously a bit on the modern side, but for our second floor (where they'll be used) we're allowing ourselves a bit of latitude for fun.

Stay tuned next weekend when we get to the install work!

Long time reader of your site ... I felt the need to respond to this! I love the modern furnishings that you are adding to your bedroom ... in designing my own living room, I discovered that I loved the whimsical mixture of traditional pieces with more modern pieces! I think it adds interest and fun to a space! Your bedroom is going to look great ... but more important, it is going to work for you!

Did you have any room left for people in the Subaru?? POPS -30-

Thank you for keeping up this blog. I've been reading for more than a year and love to see what you've both have done with the house! Now, I have to tell you that I LOVE Ikea. I don't think there is a room in my house that doesn't have something from Ikea in it. A lot of people I've talked to think it's all ultra modern stuff, until I point out this and that around our house (which is definitely not ultra modern! lol). :-)

We have the Ikea virus too and are actually considering their kitchen cabinets when we do our long overdue kitchen remodel. (Later, later.) But I have a question about your PAX system.

Does it look like the system would survive if you took about 3-6 inches off the top of the frame?

I know it's an odd question, but we have a bedroom with a wall line that starts sloping up to the ceiling part way up, so our options with the PAX would be to have it out two feet into the room away from the wall, or to somehow cut the frame to fit the wall. And since you guys are the only folks I know with the system, I thought I would ask: does it look possible that that would work without destroying the structural integrity of the unit?

Tim--Good question. We're actually planning to start the assembly this weekend so I'll let you know once we start. Maybe I can send you some photos of the joint locations so you can see where the cuts would cross.

If you haven't already taken the photos, don't worry about it--after we painted our master yesterday, we figured out a way to rearrange the room so that we could use some interior walls that didn't slope to place the wardrobes. Our PAX units will be getting here sometime before the heat death of the universe... depending on how long it takes to get here via Internet.
