"The sky(light) is the daily bread of the eyes."

Category:

(With many apologies to Emerson.)

Skylights aren't traditional in most old homes. However, the most wonderful places in which I've woken up from a refreshing sleep have provided me with a clear view of the sky in some fashion.

It is when I wake up to this abundance of natural light that I do not regret for one second our decision to install these. I think our Craftsman brethren, had Velux technology been around at the time, would have approved of this next step in blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors. Just as their porches and many windows and gardens and sunrooms did.

While I am lying here recuperating from a nasty cough and cold, being able to view the sky is a nice dose of alternative medicine.

A view of the outdoors when I first open my eyes in the morning puts me in a good mood for the day. One of our bedrooms has a bay window with a lovely view ... sadly it is the smaller bedroom and we chose the largest with the larger bathroom for ourselves. But I like to flop on the bed and read in there or hang out with the cats.

The collective roofs here in my very ancient little village are littered with skylights. I don't think these old house would be habitable otherwise. We have at least four planned for our roof. I think they're great!

hmmm. I typed up this great long comment yesterday about skylights and natural lighting and polycarbonate walls but I guess it got eaten by my firewall. so today i shall be brief.

nice skylights!

i can't even spell my own name. grrr

This has nothing to do with houses (at least, not the solid, permanent kind), but this summer while camping out and backpacking in the red rock/canyonland area of Utah, I often woke up late at night and found myself watching the stars through the mesh opening in our tent ceiling. One night I counted six meteors. It's one of my favorite memories, and this post made me think of it.

Hope you're feeling better!

I love how you consider the ideas behind the A&C movement, instead of just the forms. The forms are transitory, informed as much by the technology, resources, and society of a particular time; but the ideas are eternal, useful to anyone who wants a certain flavor and richness in their environment.
Yeah, I think Morris and crew would have loved your skylights~ especially how you placed them.

Nice skylights! Why no mosquito screens in them? Didn't you say skeeters were sucking your blood in your garage? I don't have screens in our skylites in our apt........and I wish we did!

oops, maybe you do have screens in them....I can't tell for sure. And I see now it was someone else responding who had the garage full of skeeters. My bad!

Yes, there are screens...they just don't appear clearly in the photo.
