We've got a handle on it

Category: Restore & Repair

Really.  I'm serious.  We've got a handle on it.

This is the temporary handle we installed on the front door as the new door was put in last, um, November when my parents were here.  Aaron has promised me that he will recap the amazing acrobatics of HOW we got the front door replaced soon.  As in, "before 2007."

We purchased a new handle for this door last fall and it has sat in our basement ever since.  Installing it was a job that, technically, we SHOULD have been able to accomplish ourselves.

Should have...if I wasn't such a wimp.

We worked so hard for this darn door...this solid wood Craftsman door that replaced the awful circa 1960's hollow core door that had been rudely installed in the entry way of our bungalow decades ago.  And the thought of goofing up, perhaps ruining it, was just too much to bear.  And so, the door handle sat in its box for EIGHT long months.

And then we called A-Ashland Lock (at the recommendation of our friend and often partner-in-crime, Lisa).  They came right out and installed it.  Hurray for them!

If these pictures are blurry, it's because the locksmith is moving SO DARN FAST and has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with the person operating the camera.  Ahem.

Thanks to the kind locksmith, we now use THIS to open the door:

Sharp, eh?  Here's the other side:

Pay no attention to my hoopty job of insulating the space around the jamb.  It was November.  I was almost 8 months pregnant.  I've been a bit busy since then.  I have to go back and redo it, and then reinstall some trim.

Here's the "kind of further along front porch".  I've painted on one of the trim colors but haven't painted on the second shade, so the glare on the porch ceiling is pure primer.  And we're still missing a doorbell (Aaron will explain when he talks about the installation of the door.)  And I haven't finished cleaning off the stucco from the roof disaster of '05.  But, you know, we'll get there.

So here we are, locked up nice and tight and fashionable.  So we can protect the house's most important treasure...this:

She has just discovered that she has a tongue.  How rude!

Lol...how cute is she!!! And the lock too :-)

HA! She's cute. I think she's sticking her tongue out because she's upset that you hired outsiders to work on the place.

Those door lock jigs that they sell for about $20 at the evil empire work pretty well. I wouldn't want to mess with a hammer and chisel on an expensive door like that.

I understand about the anxiety when there are no do-overs. Eventually we want to replace our front door with something more craftsman-y, but not for a while. I love the lock set you selected.

I don't know how you can get anything done with that little sassy cutie to wonder at.

Oh my. I thought the door was lovely, but then I scrolled down further and saw your little punkin. What a doll baby! Oh, Miss P is only 19mo old and I'm already missing that baby stage. Time to get started on #2...

I think...I THINK...we have the same door hardware...only ours is the hammered finish and lever style interior knob...and i love it so much i want to run away with it and have little hardware babies...beloved door hardware

Oh, that Grace! Such a winsome face.

J&A, your door and your door hardware are absolutely beautiful. You are also wicked, wicked enablers.

Two of our three exterior doors are hollow-core wood and falling apart, and I just picked up a moonlighting gig so I can buy at least one, if not two new Simpson doors before the rainy season hits (this one, I think). And if it hadn't been for your site, I'd have never known about them.

Wow, so you're a mom and a handywoman. Congrats! If you come back to Jersey anytime I might need to employ you for some work on my home.

P.S. -- How's the Snoopy Sno-Cone Maker working out?

Hmmmm. Snoopy Sno-Cone Maker. It could be the sleep deprivation but I'm drawing a blank. Darn! Who could this be? Shoot me an email at owner (at) houseinprogress (dot) net and send more clues please!

Mmmm - purdy entry door - it has come a long way these past few years ;)

And Grace? Could not be cuter. What a head of hair that girl has got!
