What on Earth: Gerber Knives

Category: What on Earth!?

It's been a long, long time since I've looked in any of the remaining boxes, trunks and whatnot from the items still in the house.  Yes, still in the house.  Over the last three years, we've gifted items, sold items, donated items, recycled items, pitched items.  And there are still MORE THINGS!

Just for grins, I took some quick photos of a wooden box that I stumbled upon while cleaning out a drawer in preparation for some work on the first floor.

Looks innocent enough, eh?

When I opened it, I found a set of EXTREMELY sharp stainless steel knives with the mark "Gerber-12" on one side of each handle and "MIMING" on the other.

Given that the only "Gerber" I'm familiar with these days is the baby food, I did a little research on the Internet.  Here's what I found out:

Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910. One Christmas, he hired a local knifemaker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.

Based upon the brand's logo on the documentation, I'm guessing that this particular set was manufactured between 1947 and 1952.  And the set looks like it has never been used.

The current tagline for their knife designers is hilarious..."When one of these guys gets a knife stuck in his brain, it's a good thing."  I don't believe this particular set of knives was destined for use by a Navy Seal or fireman, but one never knows.

The Miming Set are steak knives in a walnut presentation box, I know that much.  They are pretty sleek looking and ouchy-sharp.   We already have a set of steak knives, so these will probably go back to the basement for now.

If you decide to sell these, would you mind letting me know? My husband would go nuts for them, both because of his profession and because of their Portland history.

He's a knife thrower??? (grin) Will do. Let me research a comparable price from eBay history or something like that for you.

Have you considered putting together some of the better things into the beginnings of a Hope Chest for your wee one. Those are a beautiful set she could use in her home one day.
Buy a simple cedar chest and put away all the good household items.

My two cents.

Hee. I need to order new jackets for him for work, and I now have a naughty urge to change the embroidery from:

Chef Salvatore
Executive Chef

to:

Chef Salvatore
Knife Thrower

I wonder how long it'd take for him to notice. ;)

(And thank you.)

My brother and his wife gave us a set of Gerber knives as a wedding present 14 years ago (I know people are squeamish about knives as wedding gifts but we were pretty excited). I had never heard of Gerber before either but these knives are fantastic -- they are extremely lightweight and still sharp as the day we opened them. Plus, they look exactly like the ones in your photo (without the nice box). A knife thrower would be proud to own them.

My birthday is not for months, My divorce was final 3 months ago, I have three dogs, and would get 5 friends for those knives.

I grew up on gerber steak knives. I used them for screwdrivers, prybars, chisels, sod trimmers,(don't ask)and untold crimes against edged tools.

They are the absolutely the best manufactured knives for cutting meat.
and your gonna stick them back in the basement?
Keep the box, send me the knives.

I just love your blog. So very funny and intersting. I came upon it while doing a search for 1000 leggers. You write with such humor. I just had to tell you how much I enjoyed this. Your baby is beautiful by the way! Thanks for brightening my day.

I have a 4 knife set just like them! Any idea of their value?

I would like to buy either the box or the whole set with Knives and box. These normally go for about $10 a knife on ebay. I have a set of 6 already, which we got as a wedding present too. We are older now and can afford to serve steaks to 12 guests at the same time. Thanks for your consideration.

Dave

Please, let me know if the Gerbers knives are available. If "yes", what's the price?
Thank you, Inna

I got a set like this in a two level box with 2 carvers and a fork of same style. Not for sale...

I have 12 gerber steak knives that came in sets of 4. The price for 4 knives about twenty years ago was over $100.00, so don't just give them away. They are the best knives I have ever used. I also have an all stainless steel Gerber bread knife, which is the finest quality.

Does anyone know if Gerber miming steak knives can be refurbished (stainless steel is flaking off)
