Sorry for missing posts the last few days...the internet at our house has been wonky. There are many, MANY reasons that I enjoy living four houses down from Aaron's parents and now I will add generous sharing of their internet connection to that list. Not to mention their guest room while Grace and I are escaping the fumes of the floor stain and such.
One more post about the archaeology of the kitchen floor. An original back porch made of soft, splintery pine is part of the kitchen. At some point in its history, the back door was moved out and the back porch was brought into the kitchen.
It really shouldn't be an interior floor. If it were Southern Yellow Pine, like the joists in the house or Red Oak like the trim, it might be interesting to leave it there and refinish it along with the original maple kitchen floor. After all, it is an old house and that space is part of its history. But such soft pine that was outside while untreated is weathered and falling to splinters in such a high traffic area.
Luckily, our floor guy has some reclaimed old maple just like the rest of our kitchen to replace it with. And the soft pine will be gone forever. I can't wait to finally stand in my kitchen with BARE FEET! Because I am currently afraid to do that.

Our back porch was incorporated into the kitchen in the same way. I suspect that our porch was concrete, and when the kitchen was expanded, they tiled over the whole thing so the floor would match. I've been reluctant to pull up the tiles because I don't think we'll be able to patch the old porch area the way you are.
