Color Detective

Okay, speaking of color...

I know I'm getting ahead of myself here because we are NOWHERE near the point of being able to paint the living room or dining room.  However, I've always had a crush on what I like to call "Parapluie Yellow."  The warm yellow color that provides the background for the Parapluie-Revel poster by Leonetto Cappiello that I have been seeing everywhere for years.

That shade is so perfect and yet!  The mystery taunts me.  Does anyone know what that shade of yellow is called?

Hi! Been reading your blog for a while (since your husband, i think could have been you, posted about selling some of your basement treasures on the 'want ads' at my old company), but never posted.

Don't know what the color is, but you can take it to sherwin williams (maybe HD but I hate them) and they can match it for you with their computer.

Thanks for the blog, I am always entertained and informed (how else would I have found out about the sonic paint striper thingy? I'm so technical...)

It reminds me of the color in our dining room. The previous owners had painted it and we liked it so much, we kept it. It’s called ‘bran muffin’. This is the best photo I can find right now.

I'm all for rich color! As a painter, I know it as Naples Yellow, which has a kind of romantic feel to it, don't you think?

As another bungalow-dweller, I also have to protest: painting walls red is perfectly appropriate, especially the wall over your soon-to-be fireplace/bookcases in the living room. I will send you a picture of my red paint above the plate rail in my dining room as illustration.

Can't help you with the paint color name, but I will chime in that it would look great with your falun red accents. Excellent taste.

Totally off topic but have you seen http://www.smarin.net/index.php?page=product&head=product

Just saw it and since I don't have a house I thought I'd show you. :)

It's called, 'Hey, that's what we painted our bedroom!' yellow.

I had a dress almost this colour a long, long time ago and the colour was called "Spanish Yellow."

I love this shade and the name stuck with me!

I don't know the name, but since you're thinking about colors, you'll have fun at Colour Lovers: http://www.colourlovers.com/

That's a great color, but you may want to take into consideration that having it cover your whole living room might wind up being overwhelming. We painted our office that color in our last house (the shade under the chair rail) and it really was a lot more YELLOW than I'd thought when we picked it initially.

Yellow is a difficult color to get right. I'd go with a few shades lighter than the poster if you want to do the whole room.

Hey! You guys hit it big in The New York Times this morning!

Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to post a comment where it belongs, in the Open Staircase Idea entry - what a great idea. I'm tempted to rip out the the ugly bunch of vertical poles that serve as one side of a stairway in my house this very minute. What is stopping me is the fact that I have a pet who might fall over the edge, plus wondering what building codes say about this. Of course, what they don't know, etc. Still, I may want to sell the house eventually.

Your in-laws have gotten no building code grief? Or is their staircase grandfathered?

To answer your ? on what color it is -

It may be a shade of gold, rather than yellow. 13I too was looking for this color (in my mind I called it "bistro yellow") and it matched alot of colors with gold in the name. They may point you in the right direction.

I got out the box of 64 Crayolas to try and help, but could not lay my fingers on a perfect match. ;) It is a lovely shade though - we would most certainly paint a room that color...very warm and rich. Love it!

I've always loved that color (and poster too.) I had both in the hallway of our house in Rhode Island. Unfortunately, we didn't move any of our paint cans with us to Oregon. I've been trying to remember what the color we used was called but I'm coming up blank on the name.

I do have a couple of suggestions. While the color in the poster seems to vary a bit - it's deeper and more shadowy on the edges and brighter in the center, it seems (at least based on the version I have) that the Sherwin Williams color "Social Butterfly" (SW6898)is quite similar to the color in the poster. If you wanted to go one shade lighter, you could check out Sundance SW6897. Of course, paint colors are tricky - they will be influenced by everything from the amount of shadow and natural light in your room, to the kinds of lightbulbs you use, to the time of day you're looking at the color, but you could start with those samples and see if they work in your space, or if you might need a little more red or yellow or whatever. (Although, you may want to wait until your fireplace redo is complete to make sure that color goes with whatever you end up using on the fireplace!)

The other thing you could do is, if you have a copy of that poster, take it to your local paint store. Most reputable paint dealers offer custom-mixing at no charge. They can match colors in posters, fabric, wallpaper, etc. You just tell them "I want this color," hand them the sample and they will mix/match it for you. (Depending on how busy they are, they may ask you to come back the next day to pick it up.) I've done this for clients in the past with great results - it elimates the guesswork. They will keep the recipe on file for you in case you need it in the future. I did this for our bathroom. I found a color I adored and had my local paint store recreate it for me - we couldn't be happier with the results: http://www.bungalowinsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/typepad_exports_bungalow/dsc_5294.jpg

And now we have the recipe if we ever need more.

Hope this helps!

Hey! Great picture of y'all and the infamous fireplace in the New York Times! I have no idea what you two look like but recognized the fireplace the instant I clicked on the article. Nice.

I used to have that orangey-yellow-gold color in a tube of acrylic paint. I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called. Go to the art store and look at the acrylics, you'll find it there.

p.s. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRACE!!!!!

Saffron? It reminds me of pollen, anyway. Or buddist monks' robes.

Love your blog, btw. I'm tremendously jealous of your woodblock finds.

We have a similar color called Marblehead Gold by Benjamin Moore.

Great NYT pic!

Ben Moore Stewart Gold? We have had a 2'X2' square of that on our DR and LR wall for over a year now... I think we like it....

And, go ahead and paint some walls red. We painted the kitchen Behr Ruby Ring (v. similar to some of your red items). Wouldn't recomment the Behr paint, but it was the only one that had the color we wanted -- we tested everything (really everything....)

it looks like a combination of yellow ochre and red ochre, which you can find in the water color section of most craft stores. as far as matching the color, i agree with the person who said take it to a store and ask the paint expert to match it. also behr does have that machine that will supposedly match colors scanned into it. good luck!

Naples yellow - dark
