Airing Our Laundry in the New York Times

Category: Daily Diary

A New York Times article that I was interviewed for came out today.  It's about couples who renovate and their irreconcilable differences.  (Addition to the to do list:  Quickly get back to the gym to resurrect my pre-baby body.  Sheesh!  Also, never appear in a photo wearing Polar-Tec again.)

Congrats on the article! I must flit over the the Times to read it. Along with a few other houseblogger regulars, I was in an article recently, too. Not such a big-deal article, though! In mine the writer said "all the neighbors read it" ... um, I said they all know about it and that I worry they'll read it. No big deal except that I now sound extremely self-absorbed. Maybe because I am! Oops.

HI! I've been reading you guys almost since the beginning of your blog. This is off topic from the current post, but I am wondering how you liked the plastic zip system you installed awhile back for keeping out dust?

that was a great article! and it hit home on so many levels...i'll never forget the fight ken and i had over the kitchen floor. it was in the top 5 of the worst fights we ever had. i truly thought we'd have to duel it out with pistols in the backyard. he wanted black and white checkerboard (way too dramatic for me) and i wanted to restore the original yellow pine (not deco enough for him, plus we already have oak everywhere else, and he couldn't handle mixing wood floors). it got pretty vicious. names were called.

then, we came across a rerun of "you've got mail" while channel surfing, and we both looked at meg ryan's yellow and green floor and said "that would work!" we ended up with yellow and black, but it looks better than either of our original choices.

i've found that our compromises always result in a better solution than the ones we each came up with individually.

Wowza. The NY Times!!!! I think you have reached the pinnacle of blogging success. Amazing.
PS I like the article, BTW, and like the stories of the other couples, too.

Glad they didn't want to interview me ;-)

Honestly the only thing my husband and I disagree on is paint color, but it is a HUGE thing. I like neutrals... things with names like oatmeal and wheat. My husband calls them non-colors and wants BRIGHT and BOLD! So in the spirit of compromise, I painted our family room a bright granny smith apple green.

Yesterday he told me he would really love to repaint it. A nice calming neutral.

He is dead now.
