What kind of bee is this?

Does anyone know?

In warm weather, these gentle, fuzzy bees slowly throw themselves against the trim off our back porch. Eventually, they die a quiet little death on our back sidewalk.

I'm so used to bees that go after flowers that I'll admit it...these bees confuse me. i don't understand what they are after.

My worry is that they are carpenter bees. And then I will have to do something about them. Yeck.

I know you don't want to hear this, but they ARE carpenter bees. They make little carpenter-bee-sized holes in old wood, and are active this time of year. Filling holes and painting your exterior woodwork might be a good idea -- weren't you planning on doing that soon? That seemed to help at our old house. Now we live in a stone bungalow, and I haven't noticed any bee action.

If the wood is painted or treated you shouldn't have a problem. These things are eating up my fire escape made of unfinished 2 X 4s. Unfortunately they aren't working fast enough and I will probably have to take the thing down!

If they are carpenter bees, give them a hammer & a saw. POPS

UMMM We call them "borer bees" because they dont' use a hammer and saw to do their damage. They emerge every year and cause us much angst. Plugging up the holes may help but we find they are nondiscriminating creatures who will just move a few inches and start a new habitat. They seem to like our painted wood just fine. Hope you have better luck with yours.

It looks like a bumble bee to me.
