Wow. I feel so affirmed!!! What a great article about restoring wood windows in the Chicago Tribune.
The Historic Chicago Bungalow Initiative and the City of Chicago have FINALLY gotten around to approving tax breaks for bungalow owners who restore their wood windows or buy new WOOD storm windows (instead of just tax breaks for replacement windows.)
Even if you aren't into the historic accuracy thing, salvaging those old windows is much more eco-friendly than vinyl replacements, especially if you take care to update the weatherproofing on the windows and pair them with a tightly fitting storm window. (Something I'm working on.)
And if you look at the cost-benefit analysis of doing the work yourself (even if you have someone else strip them), they can even be a better deal, investment wise.

You are taking lots of pictures of your storms in progress, right? They're next on my list and I don't want to figure anything out -- I just want to copy you! Thanks for the little bit of inspiration this morning.

I really wish we could have found real wood windows for our house, but given that someone came along in the 70s and replaced them all with cheap aluminum, now we're just focusing on replacement windows.

LUCKY! i WISH we got a tax break for stuff like this...after all the drama we went through restoring our original window it would have been nice to get a little "kudos" for not adding to landfills...fortunately, i'm consoled by the fact that the windows look so great and the character they add to the house hasnt been lost
