Maybe it was fashionable to be in many clubs back then. Maybe the previous owners were fond of uniforms and secret handshakes. Whatever the reason, there is a lot of evidence that some of the previous owners were joiners.
As we've mentioned before, they were fans of scouting for boys and girls. (There is a load of scout stuff in here.) This evening, I came across this Cub Scout Program Quarterly from 1958-59.

Really. Go ahead. I'll wait.
Now, here is the question that I have about the Cub Scouts. You see, I have no brothers nor sons. So I have never experienced the Cub Scouts through close family or friends.
Do the den mothers REALLY dress like this?
You might want to click on this one, too.
Because, if they still dress like that? Then Susan at Friday Playdate has TOTALLY been holding out on me.
Seriously, Susan. This never shows up on your fashion blog!

Yes, some of them did dress like that. Uniform, you know. Remember, this was 1960. Few of them were this pretty. She looks like she just walked out from a Sears-Roebuck catalog. POPS --30--

Back in the 50s they definitely dressed like that. I was a "den mother" in the 80s -- we had a uniform of yellow shirt w/navy blue pants and a kerchief. My dad was a "neighborhood commissioner" in the Boy Scouts during the 50s and his uniform was olive drab - pants, shirt, belt, tie and hat.
