In the Salt Mines

Category: Daily Diary

This has been my life for the last few days.

Sand. Sand. Sand. Sand.

The whine of the palm sander prevents me from listening to the radio. To stave off boredom, I've been singing VERY, VERY loudly while I work. Showtunes, mostly. A few traditional jazz selections. I'm sure the neighbors think that we are torturing cats in the basement.

There is a gazillion miles of poplar trim down here and I have to sand it all two or three times. The first time with rough sandpaper, then medium, and (if needed) very fine. All because of some funky marks the showed up on the face of the boards when we had them planed down to size.

This may seem ultra-picky, but I am just insane detail-oriented enough to be bothered by a long groove running across the trim after it is stained. So. It. Must. Be. Obliterated.

Thus, the palm sander. And the hours of hunching over. And the noise. And the showtunes.

Well, the showtunes are actually just thrown in there.

Excellent, while you are at it, I'll drop by the pieces of the table I am building. It's just a couple of feet of wood - you won't even notice the extra work.

The trim is going to be great - can't wait to see it installed.

I feel your pain! I just ordered stainless steel sanding discs for my orbital sander. Suppose to last many times longer than regular. Will post my findings. Out of desperation, I think I have experimented with every known sanding material known to man.

Keep at it... it's worth it!

Oh sanding, it's such a wonderfully evil thing. :) It will be worth it though!

You might try getting some noise protection ear-muffs (I forget the real name for them) and were ear-bud earphones under them. I do it all the time while sanding or using the shop vac for extended periods of time.

You are wearing your mask. Yes?????

I strongly recommend investing in a good pair of in-ear headphones (I have the Shure E4Cs). They really help make it through long periods of sanding/hammering/sawing/what have you.

Hi, don't know if you need more lumber, but have you checked out Murco Recycling? They have dimensional lumber that they are selling.
