T.K. finished setting the tile. It's handmade tile. Single squares. Not easy to line up and it is meant to be beautiful in its imperfections and deviation. Working with it is not for sissies.
T.K. is no sissy. He nailed it. The fireplace is gorgeous and it hasn't even been grouted yet.
Dang. He is THAT good.

That man is a Craftsman prodigy! It doesn't even look like the same room. Do you enter it in the morning and have to pinch yourself to realize that yes, this is your house?

Do you have pictures showing the various layers of construction between the destroyed brick and the tile?
I'm guessing you nailed up strips of wood onto the brick to create a front, then put the tile board over it, and then the tile, but I'd be curious to see how the transition was made.

You must have used Pratt & Larson tile on your beautiful fireplace! I'm lucky enough to live in Portland, OR where they have not only a factory, but a seconds outlet as well. We've done our kitchen and bathroom using P&L tile. If it weren't for the seconds store, it would have been too costly. Rejuvenation is just a few blocks from the tile store, and it has a seconds and returns room too. If you lived here I know you'd have fun looking through all the salvaged and new items they carry that aren't in their regular catalogue. I love your blog. We've been doing major renovations on our home since March 2006, and I can relate to the work, mess and expense. But there is nothing like the feeling of completing a beautiful room and knowing you did most of the work with your own two hands! Congratulations on a beautiful home.

Ah, all of you Portland people have ALLL of the luck!
No, I don't think it is Pratt & Larson. We priced P&L at another tile place and we couldn't afford it. This tile was on the pricey side for us (more than an American Olean or Daltile) but way less than a lot of tile we loved. Think "very low 20's" per square foot which was probably the most we've spent on 99% of the products we've used in the house. We justified it by reducing the amount of tile used in the surround (only 14 sq ft).
I've seen the P&L stuff, though, and DANG. Gorgeous.
