We had a cougar, people. Yes, a cougar. In an alley. On the northside.
No, not this kind of cougar. We see these all of the time in urban environments.
Right, this kind.
Makes taking out the garbage a whole new adventure.

It's sad they had to kill it though.

NO WAY! When I was in college, I interned with United States Cellular (so long ago that the "car phones" we sold were rare, expensive and actually permanently installed IN YOUR CAR, and when people heard the word "cellular" they asked me if I was a biology major.) To catch the train to work, I used to ride the bus up Foster from my apartment on Southport (a couple of blocks from the lovely Music Box Theater) right past North Park University and all the cute little Swedish shops. (I always loved that neighborhood, which is one of the reasons I love reading your blog. The only Swedish shop near my house is IKEA!) So, I am trying to picture a COUGAR roaming around that area and I just can't do it. How incredibly bizarre! Maybe he just had a hankering for some lingonberries? :-)

Ha ha! So funny. I was actually at a pretty trendy bar with my friends last week and there was a woman there who was WELL past the median age of the rest of us. She thought she was the hottest thing on two legs. So, upon my friends' urging, I chatted her up for a while. I can honestly say I hit on a cougar in the last week. Like the top photo, not the bottom!

Sarah--I was sad that it was shot, too. Though I tried to think of how the cops would have had to make a split second decision to either let it get away over a fence/feel cornered/hurt someone, or shoot it. I imagine that is why they did it. There wasn't an animal control officer on the scene or anyone with a tranq dart, unfortunately. So sad.
Stephanie--Hey! I remember US Cellular! I worked for Chrysler when the execs had those! It was cutting edge to have one, too. I feel privileged to have owned the Motorola Bag Phone until 2001, when Aaron finally made me trade it in. Which is now in a museum. Nice.
Nate--I must confess. Although I didn't meet him in a bar (met through roommate) and eventually married him, I am the older woman in my relationship with Aaron. Old enough that the bands I listened to in high school were retro by the time he was in high school. Meow! :)

Jeannie - I applaud your commitment to the bag phone! I suspect you'd love my college roommate. In our Wrigleyville apartment, circa 1991, she still insisted on proudly displaying and using her 70s era yellow banana phone: (http://www.oaktreeent.com/web_photos/Telephones/Yellow_Push-button_Loop_Phone_web.jpg). In fact, I think she still has it. :-)
