Where's Jeannie?

Category: Baby

Thanks so much for all of the kind e-mails asking, "Where are you? Are you okay?" And I just want to assure everyone that I AM fine. I hope to return to blogging soon. SO many things in progress here...which means that it is probably time to let all housebloggers know that...

...pregnancy and home improvement (especially in the first trimester) really don't mix. :)

This is an unretouched photo of the kidlet in her 20th week. And, yup, it's a girl. Who will be receiving a PINK TOOL BELT at some point, we are sure.

pinktoolbelt.jpg

Yes, HouseInProgress now has a KidInProgress...albeit a little sooner than we expected (as in, "before we moved to the second floor"). And the thought of nesting in this house makes me hyperventilate.

Aaron has been an absolute hero as he has had to pick up many of the projects I was working on because of fumes and so on. And because his big 'ol wife sleeps a lot more now, can't lift heavy stuff, and is feeling super clumsy. Though I still get to handle the lighter power tools! Well, as long as I can reach around myself I will.

So, now that the deadline of mid-January is bearing down upon us, we're feeling exhausted and motivated at the same time to finish up a few things. Ack! Moving upstairs, winterizing the house, getting the kitchen space in order.

A few friends have asked me if I will start a baby blog and I have decided not to. There are so many great baby blogs on the 'net and I've enjoyed reading them. News of the kidlet may pop up here on time to time as it affects work on the house and so forth. My heroine HANDS DOWN is ChrisC from A Fisherman's House who plunged into DIY and new baby with NO INDOOR BATHROOM. That is bravery, people, I'll tell you what.

Because having a clean and safe bathroom, kitchen and bedroom really never seemed so important, somehow. And, as ChrisC says, this isn't just for san-i-tary reasons...it's for san-i-ty reasons.

Nursery? OK!

Category: Baby

OK, so now that the cat's out of the bag, we've added a new progress tracker to our home page--the nursery. :-) We'd designed the second bedroom upstairs to be pretty flexible, so instead of an office it's going to be the little tyke's room for a while.

Certainly we aren't the only ones who work on fixing up a nursery in preparation for the big event...but we're guessing we're one of the few who can say we've already been working on the room for a year!

A Quick Fix Detour on the Road to Renovation

Category: Baby

Someone over at Blogging Baby recently confirmed that we're not the only ones who are worried about having young kids around during construction. The difference is that we don't currently have the budget or time to pull off the full gut kitchen renovation that she's doing.

And so, instead, we offer up the latest twist in our bungalow renovation oddessy.......Kitchen Makeover, Trading Spaces style!

That's right, in the spirit of the seminal quick fix DIY show we're doing a superficial facelift of our kitchen to clean up the grime before the baby arrives.

The Goal? To clean up the kitchen, repaint, and put everything back in a more organized way in three days.

The Challenge? Well, isn't it obvious...?

The Twist? Like the show, we're going to have special guests to come over and help us with the work...Jeannie's parents!

(Not the most current photo, but they are STILL this stylish and good looking.)

With the baby's due date creeping ever closer, we've gotten them concerned enough about the state of our living arrangements to inspire them to drive all the way from Virginia with a drill and paintbrush. Isn't family great!?

So, we'll be blogging regularly over the next three days as we try to get everything done. Cross your fingers!

Giving Thanks

Category: Daily Diary

This Thanksgiving has been a special one for us for a couple of reasons.  First off, it's the first one we've spent with a good portion of my side of the family in over five years.  We had dinner over at my parents house, where we were joined by my dad's parents and his oldest sister's family.

After dinner there was another special treat that J and I weren't expecting...

...we were given a bassinet originally made by my grandfather (Grandpa Keith, who was present) and used by my three younger cousins when they were born.  We also received a beautiful blanket knit by my grandmother.

The name of each child who has used it is etched in to the wooden bottom.  Our's will be the forth listed and the first great grandchild to use it.  It was especially meaningful to have my grandfather there as my aunt and uncle handed it down to us to use.

Everyone should be so blessed.

So, How's the Nursery Coming Along?

Category: Restore & Repair

OK, Thanksgiving has officially come and gone--the holiday onslaught begins.  And in our household, that means another thing...the baby is coming!  Only two months to go, in fact.  Hard to believe.  Equally hard to believe that we're ready for all this.

Especially when you notice that the nursery just off of our master bedroom still looks like this...

If you don't want to read anything about baby rooms, baby toys, baby cribs or babies in general you'll want to skip this post and probably scale back your reading of this blog in general over the next month or so.  We've got lots of work to do...

What's in all of the plastic bags in that photo, you ask?  Lots of great infant hand-me-downs and gifts from family and friends.

All that stuff that babies want and need...like a blue animal thing-y with a plastic arch thing over its head and lots of things that slide around.

And next to that?  Why a Dewalt orbital sander, of course.

Uh yeah, that's gonna have to change.

A Bedroom Only a Mother (in Law) Could Love

Category: Restore & Repair

In a little over a month, Jeanne's mom will arrive to stay with us through the weeks just before and just after the baby is born.  I say in all ernestness: this is a very good thing.  In spite of the eight hour baby class we attended at the hospital yesterday, we don't have a clue as to what we're doing.

I'm clarifying up front that we really do want her here because the rest of this post might make you think otherwise.  Why?  Well, with the current state of things in the house we only have one place she can stay: the bedroom with the crazy wall!

The bad news is it gets worse...

Unfortunately, 'the bedroom with the crazy wall" is also know as "the bedroom without heat".  For some reason, the former owners rigged up baseboard steam heat in the (poorly) winterized back porch by removing the radiator in the adjoining bedroom.  And while J's parents both stayed with us a few months back in this very bedroom, it's a fair bit cooler in there now.  OK..actually it's much cooler.

So, Saturday afternoon we spent some time winterizing the bedroom.  This included taking a plastic kit (one designed for patio doors) and doing a double plastic barrier over the doorway that leads out to the back porch.  Why didn't we just put a temporary door in there?  Well, it is the only real source of light in the room.

Believe it or not, the plastic combined with leaving the main bedroom door open warmed up the room surprisingly well and doesn't lose much heat.  If we can just to a little bit more to cozy up the room (and cover up the crazy wall), it shouldn't be half bad.

(If a certain someone is reading this entry...really, it's warmer!)

Announcing Grace Margaret Elise

Category: Baby

At 3:40 yesterday morning, Grace Margaret Elise was born 11 days earlier than expected.  She weighted 6 lbs. and 10 ounces, and has a surprisingly full head of dark hair.  She's perfect.

Both mom and daughter are doing well.  Here are a few of the first pictures to introduce her to everyone... :-)

Finally, for the parents and friends out there here's a short video clip of J holding Grace for the first time.  She's a real charmer.  :-)

You Know You Live in a Fixer-Upper With a Baby When...

Category: Baby

...your tablesaw spends more time holding dirty clothes than cutting wood.

Jeanne keeps reminding me I shouldn't have put it under the laundry chute...  ;-)

Actually, the saw got a little attention this weekend and we even made it to the hardware store...twice!

Grandma and Grandpa took Grace for the afternoon Sunday, so we had a chance to get some stuff done.  Exciting stuff, like groceries and taxes!

Actually, we did do some prep work for a few of our neglected projects.  Menard's had a sale on hard woods, so we picked up some oak pieces to complete the upstairs trim.  Even more cool, we picked up some parts to try our first woodworking project from scratch--a built-in bookcase in the nook in the master bedroom.

It's a pretty simple project really, but we needed a reasonable task to test our skills and courage.  If all goes well, we might even tackle the built-in bookcases when we restore the living room fireplace.

Hopefully we can pick up the pace and have a busy summer!

First Love

Category: Baby

Not house-related at all.  But we were hanging out on the bed this morning with Grace when, all of a sudden, she fell in love for the first time.  It was very touching.  We recorded the whole affair on film.

Hey...who is THIS guy?

colbert1.jpg

Your face...it is so smooth, so two-dimensional, so...so...maniacal...

colbert2.jpg

How YOU doin'?

colbert3.jpg

Oh, Stephen Colbert!  Mwah!  Mwah!  Mwah!

colbert4.jpg

Oh, I shall fold you up and have you with me ALWAYS!

But Daddy!  I lovvvvvvve himmmmmm....

Reno Baby

Category: Baby

renobaby.jpg

I really should be napping right now.  Grace is sleeping soundly.  We were both up at all hours of the night last night as she is going through a growth spurt--or something--and wakes up every 1-2 hours to chatter and talk in her crib.

Why can't I sleep?  Because of the noise.  How is this kid able to sleep through this noise?

(By the way, if you are going to click on any of the following links?  Turn up your speakers if you are alone.  Turn them down if you're at work.)

First, we have one of Adam's guys working on rebuilding our woefully messed up kitchen floor downstairs. This sounds like "ZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!" (cutting maple hardwood), "BANG! BANG! BANG!" (hammering it into place), "Ka-THUNK! Ka-THUNK!!" (I believe that is the nailgun).

Also, military jets are executing low fly-by's which means that it must be the weekend of the Chicago Air & Water Show.  This has never been my favorite weekend in Chicago.  I used to live three blocks from the lakefront and I would NEVER check my calendar.  Every year without fail, it would be 8:00 am on a sunny Saturday morning and I would be dozing peacefully.  Suddenly, my fingernails would be embedded in the ceiling plaster as I was propelled straight into the air by the sound of some jet fighter breaking the sound barrier.  And there I would cling, like Wile E. Coyote in a Road Runner cartoon.

Finally, Chicago (The City! That Works!  Near Election Time!) decided to begin replacing the sewer system in the street eight houses  away from us.  This morning.  At 7:15 am.   With pounding that sounded like the report of a cannon.  The house is shaking.  I wish I were being overdramatic.  But I'm not.

But the baby, is, well, sleeping like a baby.

And I cannot understand it.  THIS is the kid who, if a stair tread creaks in the middle of the night, will be wide awake.  The kid who is so uber-alert that I have had to nurse her in a dark closet.  (I am not kidding.)  The kid who, if I so much as breathe or sigh or talk to someone in the next room while she is nursing, will whip her little face towards mine and fix me with a look that says, "Would you shut UP already?!  Geez-louise! I'm eating here!"

Yes, THAT kid can sleep through a chop saw, hammers, nail guns, fighter jets, dump trucks and backhoes.

She's a renovation baby. So what's my problem?

The Lead Paint Dilemma

Category: Restore & Repair

I was reminded that I hadn't followed through on my promise to explain why we went with white trim in the back hallway, two back bedrooms and kitchen from an earlier post.

It seems like an odd choice, doesn't it, after all of the hard work we put into salvaging and stripping the trim upstairs and in the sunroom?  Well, right after Grace was born, we decided to make those rooms serviceable and I became very anxious about chemicals and toxins and dust.  I conducted an asbestos test on the tile that was removed (it came back negative).  And then, I conducted more thorough lead tests on the paint in those rooms.  Turns out that one of the (many) layers of paint on that trim and old plaster contained lead.  i shouldn't have been surprised...most old houses contain lead paint of some sort.

I was paralyzed.  I might be able to blame some of it on overprotective mom hormones, but, honestly?  I probably would have reacted the same way sans hormones.  What to do?  We didn't want to take the trim off (thus creating more dust) or take any walls down (ditto).  So, I did what I always do when I panic.

I headed for the internet.

Enter, Fiberlock Products.

.fiberlock.jpg

Fiberlock makes a few products for encapsulating lead paint.  What are encapsulants?  Well, according to the NY State Health website:

Encapsulants are materials that are applied over lead-based paint to seal the paint to a surface and prevent the release of paint chips or dust. The material may be either a liquid or an adhesive. Encapsulation provides a barrier between the paint and the environment. Conventional paint is NOT an encapsulant.

Encapsulants work best on clean, dry and solid surfaces. Encapsulants cannot be used on the following: Surfaces that are walked on; Surfaces that rub together; Surfaces that are badly deteriorated.

I think it bears repeating that conventional paint is NOT AN ENCAPSULANT.  We decided to prep the walls, trim and ceiling in the rooms with lead paint, encapsulate it, and then paint over the encapsulant.

FINDING the encapsulant to purchase was not an easy task.  This wasn't something in a regular big-box hardware store.  Able Service & Supply in Skokie, Illinois was kind enough to create a special order for me. Fiberlock Technologies makes a number of lead paint encapsulant products.  However, applying it isn't as simple as just painting it on.  First, this stuff is THICK and must be stirred with an electric paint stirrer to thoroughly mix its contents.  Otherwise, it's useless.  Second, there are specific temperature and humidity conditions that you need to apply it in.  And third, the surface must be properly prepared for the compund to adhere correctly.  (For example, you cannot apply it over peeling, flaking or chipping paint.)

However, those conditions were easier to meet now than the conditions required for safe lead paint removal (which we've also done before a few years ago).  So, Lead Barrier Compound it was.

I like the Park Service's explanation of the methods used to control lead dust hazards.  If you hire a pro to do lead paint removal in your home, this is an important read to make sure that your contractor is doing the right things to protect you and your family.

But lead paint dust containment isn't just a concern when you are stripping paint.  Demolition of interior or exterior walls, removal of interior/exterior trim, replacement of windows...all of these can create an enormous amount of lead dust and proper work area dust containment is critical as is regular cleaning/ maintenance in the house

Even when I have worked on the exterior of our windows, I have used insulating window film on the inside of the window in order to trap dust that might migrate inside of the house and to make clean up easier.

Also, if you suspect lead dust anywhere in the house...test, test, test.  Don't go into denial. Don't freeze.  If you are informed, you can deal with the problem.  Better to put in the work to contain lead dust and paint than to expose your family to a health problem that might be treated but CANNOT be reversed.

Be safe out there.

Your Baby Proofing Experiences and Advice?

Category: Baby

Yes, Grace is almost at that stage where she will be able to unleash her energy upon the world in a much more mobile way.  People ask, "Is she crawling yet?"  And I tell them that I keep pushing her little butt down when she tries to scoot around.  (My sister, the wise mother, advised this.)  However, she will probaby thwart us soon by discovering her legs and then I will be running after her for the rest of my life.

I know that I'm going to regret teaching her how to open and shut my dresser drawer.  But it was raining, she has a runny nose, and we were bored.  I believe the phrase "we were bored" was the precursor to most of what got ME into trouble during MY childhood.

grace_drawer.jpg

So, instead of building a little armoured bubble that she must stay in at all times (how tempting), we are frantically putting together a baby-proofing plan for the house.  Nothing like the last minute, eh?

If she is anything like me, I am in for an interesting ride.  i think they put the Christmas tree into my playpen one year to keep it safe from me. You can almost see the wheels turning in that little brain.  "Hmm.  Today this drawer.  Tomorrow?  I GET THE CAR KEYS!!!"

grace_drawer2.jpg

What are your recommendations?  Things that you found you couldn't live without and others that you thought were worthless?  Brand names?  Purchasing decisions?

We'll obviously need baby gates.  And wall socket plugs (?)  And cabinet locks. And toilet locks.  And..and...ACK!  There is so much information about this out there!  It is really overwhelming.

So, what say you all?

Her Favorite

Category: Daily Diary

You can spend all the money that you want, research each selection for hours and hours, wrap the gifts as nice as can be, but the favorite is still going to be the same as it ever was.

graceinboxhouse.jpg

This is the very slapped together playhouse I made for her out of a cardboard box the week before Christmas.

Other favorites are obviously shoes and Butt Paste.  The kid? She either has very strange tastes or she is going to be the next MacGyver.

A Mom is a Mom is a Mom

Category: Daily Diary

Dear Diary--

My mom and dad came for the weekend to celebrate Grace's first birthday.  They arrived at the house at 3:40 pm.

This was my mom at 3:41 pm.

momcleans2.jpg

That blur above the counter?  That is her hand.  Scrubbing. The counter.  With detergent.  I had just returned from hanging up her coat.  Which she had just removed less than 60 seconds earlier.

clockmomclean.jpg

See?

I have thought of four possible explanations for her behavior:

  1. Between 8 hours in the car with my dad and many cups of Dunkin Donuts black coffee, she had a lot of pent up energy that exploded all over my kitchen counter;
  2. She had just been listening to a radio program about a rare disease spread only by germs left on kitchen counters and, because of her great love for me and my family, immediately got to work SAVING US from an unspeakable horror that we were not yet aware of;
  3. She feels that, armed with a paper towel and some Fantastik, that she will be able to save her beloved granddaughter from my wacky decision to renovate a spectacularly craptastic house while living in it;
  4. She is loveable.  Yet slightly insane.  And there is no real explanation.

Because, certainly, she wouldn't be suggesting that I NEVER CLEAN MY COUNTERS???  Would she?  Hmm?  Mom???

The Weekend

Category: Daily Diary

Tomorrow, it will be back to house-related stuff.  Today, I owe my mom this entry in order to beg forgiveness for yesterday's "smart-alec entry" (her words, not mine).  I will win her back by posting pictures of her grandchildren.  The photos from Grace's birthday party this past weekend when we celebrated at my in-laws' lovely home down the block instead of attempting a celebration crammed into the bedroom/office turned dining room at casa disaster.

"What?  A party?  For ME???"

At this point in the party, the only thing missing is  a lampshade on her head.  Nice feet up on the table there.

The Kitchen is Done!!!

Category: Baby

Grace's kitchen, that is.   For her second birthday, we gave our future indentured servant a kitchen of her own so that she could start her training pronto.  What will she get next year? A miniature woodshop and oil change garage.  After that, she begins to be responsible for the real thing.

Aaron in his role of "Greatest Dad Ever" spent a few hours assembling the kitchen the night before.

grace2ndbday2.jpg

I know, I know.  I haven't mastered the white balance on the new camera yet.  Still.  Almost two years later.  I'm working on it.

grace2ndbday3.jpg

grace2ndbday4.jpg

Grace's kitchen shares only one thing in common with my real kitchen...the oven doesn't work.  But in every other sense, her kitchen puts my kitchen to shame.  It's humbling.

grace2ndbday1.jpg

Red knobs!  And you know what that means?   Yeah, my kid is a stove snob.  Take THAT, Easy Bake Oven.  However, it is more likely that the (eventually) real kitchen stove will be more Easy Bake Oven than Wolf, so this is as close as we're ever going to get.

So a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the special delivery who has slowed down our renovation process.  Eh, it's all worth it.  She'll have to start pulling her own weight next year.

Trissa and Nick are already training Atticus, so we have a lot of catching up to do.

(Also, BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES to our pal, Lisa, who shares a birthday with Miss Grace!  I totally owe you a beer, Lisa!)

Renovation with Toddler

Category: Baby

Thursday, April 3, 2008

4:30 am: Stumble out of bed at in-law's house to go to crying toddler, tripping over the suitcases that we have been living out of since March 12th. Excellent time to experiment with toddler-friendly swear words interjections.

livingoutofsuitcase.jpg

4:40 am: Toddler grumbles back to sleep after diaper change and soothing.

4:42 am: Unable to sleep, get up and balance checkbook. Realize that you fell asleep in your clothes instead of pajamas. Wonder if this is would be considered slovenly or efficient in the morning? Decide to put a positive spin on it...efficient!

5:30 am: Go back to bed and try to sleep.

6:10 am: Toddler awakens. Therefore, so does mama.

7:15 am: Try to stuff active and flailing toddler into coat and hat while searching for diaper bag for quick trip to sitters. Throw headband in hair, no time for makeup, brush teeth sans toothpaste while in the car.

7:30 am: Deliver toddler to sitter's house and drive to the house that you pay a mortgage on to start working for the day.

7:45 am: Change into work clothes in the downstairs hallway since neighbor's don't need to see your holey underwear over THEIR morning coffee.

7:55 am: Pick up brushes, tack cloth, cotton rags, cans of wood conditioner and stain. Turn on the radio to catch Morning Edition. Wonder if having an interesting and lyrical name is a requirement for getting a job in Public Radio. Get down to staining woodwork.

10:18 am: Realize that the gloves that I've been using for staining woodwork have a small tear in them. Middle finger on right hand now a lovely shade of walnut. And it will be that way for a few days. Wonder what other moms at the public library will think when they see that. Think of some amusing--and possibly inappropriate--things to tell them. Wonder if my kid will be known as the child with the weird mom. Make a mental note to experiment with henna tattoos so I can camoflauge future stain mishaps and try to get some cool mom cred.

Mehandi.jpg (Image via Wikipedia)

12:35 pm: Quickly shower and change, grab a handful of trail mix, and jump in the car to pick up child at sitter's.

1:00 pm: Pick up child, catch sitter and other parent looking at middle finger of right hand. Open mouth to explain, get distracted by toddler dashing down sidewalk. Don't fight it, just submit to my weird mom reputation.

1:10 pm: Back at in-law's house, read a story to toddler. Put her down for a nap.

1:11 pm: Dash downstairs to make two business calls, download photos from camera, and do research on financial/tax issues that I'm dealing with as the volunteer treasurer for my church. Curse Quickbooks for Not-for-Profits with decidedly toddler-UNfriendly interjections.

2:00 pm: Second sitter shows up at in-law's house because this is the one day of the week where I have double coverage. Send up small prayer of thankfulness that I have such great sitters and tack on lame apology about earlier cursing at computer.

2:01 pm: Dash across alley to mortgaged house. Change back into work clothes which are on the floor of hallway. Back to work. Say hi to T.K. who is nailing trim up in the dining room.

2:02 pm: Realize that the experiment with wood filler for nail holes has failed miserably and it is showing up through the stain. On a part of the fireplace that is REALLY noticeable.

spotsugh.jpg

2:03 pm: Sigh. Scrub those spots with denatured alcohol. Pick up the palm sander, and sand it ALL BACK DOWN AGAIN. Two steps forward, one step back.

spotssand.jpg

3:25 pm: Re-condition and re-stain those spots carefully and hope that the spots no longer show. Hold breath while waiting for stain to soak in.

3:45 pm: WHOO HOO! Success!

spotsgone.jpg

3:46 pm: Finish staining the rest of the trim in the dining room and living room doorways that were stripped earlier. Also, windowsills.

5:36 pm: Run upstairs to change and quickly shower. Try to scrub stain off of hands and arms with baby oil and a nail brush. Make sure any dust is off of hair, body, clothes just in case there was any lead in the work area. Stash work clothes in a separate plastic bag for later washing and clean up the bathroom plus shower with Ledisolv.

6:00 pm: Get in the door at in-law's house, pick up overactive exuberant toddler, pay sitter and beg her to come live with us, wave goodbye to sitter as she escapes our crazy life to return to peaceful apartment with her husband.

6:02 pm: Simultaneously try to scrape together dinner while entertaining two year old. Create elaborate opera involving kitchen utensils and Fisher Price people. Encourage her to do ballet in kitchen. Unload dishwasher, wash down counters, scrape stickers off of the kitchen floor with my fingernails.

7:30 pm: Wrestle toddler into her bath and then wrestle her into pajamas. Negotiate with toddler as to the number of books we will be reading prior to bedtime. Decide that toddler has a future career as a hard-nosed negotiator and wonder if it would be inappropriate to put her to work in this area right away. Perhaps making deals for the State Department.

7:40 pm: Husband arrives home from job in far suburbs. Hand over storytelling duty to daddy.

7:41 pm: Throw laundry into the washer, tidy up the downstairs (this includes picking up building blocks which seem to have bred and multiplied since this morning.).

7:59 pm: Toddler is in bed, parents crank up laptops and begin work online. Alternate between browser tabs with blog work, email and financial research. Read Jenny's post about two year olds and laugh in recognition.

8:20 pm: Too tired to continue. Shut laptop and walk upstairs to "lie down for just a little bit."

Friday, April 4, 2008

6:15 am: Wake up in the clothes I was wearing last night.

The End.
